When I looked at a pair of eyes gleaming eagerly at me, I knew that I had not made a mistake in coming to this orphanage. I clearly remember that when I was told that we would be visiting an orphanage on the 23rd of November 2011 I wasn’t looking forward to the idea because all my previous visits have not been interactive. However, I was astounded by the love and affection that I received from the orphans as well as from the organizers, during my entire two-hour visit.
I got an opportunity to interact with Ram, a six-year-old orphan, who had the most expressive eyes that I have ever seen. During my conversation with him, I realized that I was fortunate enough to live in a house with both parents. Truly, I thank God for having given me the chance to meet Ram.
Further, on exploring the entire orphanage, I realized that the NGO does a lot more work for these underprivileged children than what is easily understood by most. Of the fifteen odd children in the orphanage, there were fourteen girls and one boy. This fact made me sit up and think about the number of girl children in India who go without food, shelter and education. It is a pity that the government of India is not able to do too much as yet in eliminating the plight of orphans in India. I do commend the work done by the orphanage in bringing joy and happiness to fifteen young souls even though destiny had ripped them apart from their parents.
It is said that we should be grateful for small mercies - surely. I am thankful to the school for taking me to this orphanage. The two hours that I spent here have been etched in my memory as outstanding examples of humanity and the visit has opened my eyes on the umpteen opportunities available to me to make a difference in the lives of a few young orphans. Today, I am determined to do my bit for these less privileged children of society.
